In yet another first, award winning ‘Obscenity Lawyer’ Myles Jackman has launched an appeal on the crowd-funding website Patreon for monthly donations to fund his pro bono activism practice.

Jackman is known for his cutting-edge work representing criminal defendants charged with consensual adult pornography offences and specialises in privacy and freedom of expression issues, especially for members of the BDSM, LGBTQ, Adult-Industry and Sex-Work communities.

The personal donations on Patreon, which currently range from pledges of $1 to $150 US Dollars per month, will allow Jackman to work pro bono on legal challenges like Judicially Reviewing the Extreme Pornography laws under which Tiger Porn defendant Andrew Holland suffered.

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which." George Orwell, Animal Farm.

In The National Anthem episode of Black Mirror, David Cameron is ransomed into having sex with a live pig on national television. Under mediaeval law animals such as pigs were subjected to criminal trial and execution for infanticide and witchcraft.

Questions of satire, reality, culpability and historical anachronism came to mind upon reading yesterday’s revelations in The Sunday Express that a biography of David Cameron claimed he inserted a “private part of his anatomy” into a “dead pig’s head” on a colleague’s lap and that another member of the Oxford University dining club was in possession of a photograph of the alleged act.

Whilst these claims about our elected Head of State may well be fallacious, the legal ramifications deserve probing; albeit in the style of a first year undergraduate law exam question answer. Hence, first and foremost, it is important to note that as settled principles of English law, animals and cadavers cannot consent to sexual activity with a human.

PORN TRIAL - Consensual Sex and The State

Despite the heartening news that a Kingston jury returned not guilty verdicts in a landmark porn trial on Wednesday, grave questions arise about the right of the state to intrude on the privacy of the individual with unfounded obscenity prosecutions.

My client, Simon Walsh, was charged with five counts of possessing "extreme pornography" under section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 (CJIA). The images showed acts of fisting and urethral sounding (the insertion of surgical rods into the urethra for the purpose of sexual gratification).

By criminalising young people between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, our political and justice systems show how disconnected they are from technological change and social values, which is especially worrying so close to an election where politicians have been exploiting selfie culture.

TWINK TRIAL - Is the CPS institutionally homophobic?

Accusations regarding child abuse images are some of the worst that an individual can face. The injustice is this case in compounded by the fact that we irrefutably proved to the prosecution, many months ago, that all the performers in the images in question were over the age of 18.

Thus this was legitimate adult pornography. No offences had been committed. Yet, perversely, this intrusive, misguided and illiberal prosecution was allowed to continue until the eve of a jury trial. Just imagine the potential impact that such an accusation could have on someone's life, career and relationships.
